Sénégal: Francophone Cultural Connections

Sénégal: Francophone Cultural Connections

This workshop will be a series about Senegalese society and culture and its relationship and interaction with the French language.

We will be talking about the history of French influence in Sénégal and also about the first Senegalese president who was the first African to get a Phd in a French University in the 20th century in 1933 , the poet Léopold Sedar Senghor .

Some topics that will be addressed in this class:
- Senegal's traditional architecture, cuisine, festivals, folklore ceremonies, craftsmanship, and social organization are modeled on ancestral values. Its taste for traditional sports, music, dance, and clothing are of huge unique culture.
- Senegalese People and Community: In many rural areas and traditional urban families, extended families live together in compounds (with separate areas for each family) or in a large house divided among families. Children typically live with their parents until they get married.
- What are the family values in Senegal?: In Senegal family is everything: support, companionship, and the definition of who you are. The idea of family is constructed out of a series of traditional values buried deep into Senegalese culture. The basis of these values comes from Islam and the traditional culture and way of life in Senegalese village
