The Avant Garde - French Studio Art

The Avant Garde - French Studio Art: From Impressionism to Dadaism

This drawing-based Studio Art Class focuses on the French Avant Garde of the late nineteenth century, artists who shaped the European art movements of the time, and into the twentieth century.

Taught in English and suitable for all skill levels, students will learn the styles and integrate the techniques of these artistic movements into their own work, beginning with Impressionism into Post-Impressionism, Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism, and Dadaism.

Students will develop an understanding of these artistic schools through interactive exercises, French artistic terms, and collaborative learning engagements. The course will culminate in a final project, portfolio, and group exhibit with public opening reception.

Instructor Colleen Hugo (they/them) holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing and painting from Tulane University, where they won Best in Show in the 2021 juried student art exhibition. They have studied at the Sciences Politiques research university in Paris, and hold a professional French diploma in business from the French Chamber of Commerce. In January 2024 they displayed drawings at Cold Water Arts gallery in St. Claude, marking their first solo show.
