September 9 at 6:30 p.m. – Friendship and Devotion, or Three Months in Louisiana – 4522 Prytania Street
L’Union Française and the Women’s National Book Association present a discussion with Dr. Robin White of Nicholls State University’s French department about her translation of Friendship and Devotion, or Three Months in Louisiana by Camille Lebrun, a nineteenth-century French feminist and abolitionist novel written about 150 years ago about the injustice of slavery in New Orleans.
The book is deeply surprising for its time. Lebrun’s text shows a pair of women friends, one white, one black, both French, confronting the spectacle of oppression present in Louisiana’s slavery practices. It offers (in some of the sentimentalist stylings of this period — think of Uncle Tom’s Cabin) a radical thesis: that if white women and black women could become allies, slavery would end overnight. As we know, this is not how slavery ended in Louisiana, but the hope of such friendships, such alliances, remains materially important in the progress of Louisiana, even today.
Women’s National Book Association of New Orleans Chapter President Anne Babson will interview Dr. White for a conversation in both French and English. There will be a Q&A after the discussion, followed by refreshments. Free and open to the public.
